SOFADECCA is managed by a team of Management Committee comprising of a Chairman (Mr. Kangogo), Secretary (Mr. Mirodho), and Treasurer (Ms. Okumu). The Managing Committee also comprise of 6 other elected members. Each Member of the Committee holds office for 1 year renewable subject to re-election by members at an annual general meeting convened for that purpose.
Mr. Kangogo is having over 20 years of handling security issues including disaster investigation, mitigation and response. Through his affiliate firm, Cornerstone Security, he is bringing in a wealth of knowledge and expertise in staff training, equipment installation and after sales services, end users training on effective use of disaster management tools and equipments as well as sound management of the National SOFADECCA Operation Network. He has a background in Criminology from the University of Nairobi. Previously he worked as a Revenue Preventive Office with the Ministry of Finance.
Mr. Mirodho is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, UK with a Degree in Bachelor of Science, Fire Engineering (Fire and Safety Options). He also holds a Diploma in Automotive Safety and Management from Kenya Industrial Training Institute (KITI). Salim brings into the program a wealth of experience having worked with Shamkay Fire Appliance as a Branch Manager between 1990 and 1996, Hyundai Corporation as Maintenance and Marketing Manager between 1997 and 2001, and finally with Shimaline Fire Security and Disaster Management Consultancy Agency as the Chairman and Managing Consultant between 2002 to date.
Ms. Okumu holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in Hotel Management. Caroline has over 7 years working experience in key positions in some of the Kenya’s leading hotels. Apart from providing financial management skills to SOFADECCA, she will be handy in supervision and field coordination having served as a Head of Supervisor of Utalii Hotel, Nairobi between July 2001 and May 2004. Currently Ms. Okumu is the supervisors manager in Migori Safari Hotel and Restuarant.
Prof. Ouma Muga, PhD,Hon. Former Vice Chancellor Moi University, Senior Researcher Enviromental Scientist. Former Assistant Enviroment Minister-Kenya.
Hon. Dr. Ochuodho Former MP Rangwe, Former MD Kenya Pipeline has PhD in Computer Engineering. He is bringing into SOFADECCA a wealth of technical and professional expertise in IT Application in Disaster Management and Mitigation. Currently he is the National Director for IT in the Government of Rwanda.
Research indicates that developing countries, where two thirds of the world population live, suffer the most debilitating consequences of disaster due to natural disasters: 90% of the natural disasters and 95% of the total disaster-related deaths worldwide occur in the developing countries. The per-capita losses in gross national products (GNP) are estimated to be twenty times greater than in industrial and developed countries. Despite these grave consequences of disasters, not much has been done to mitigate or control these consequences. Disasters continue to strike with greater frequency, magnitude and complexity. In most cases, the natural phenomena triggering the disasters are beyond human control.
